One of the advantages of having a Google Nexus device is the OTA updates that we get from them.

SmoothROM Nexus 7 Tablet UI

But a Stock ROM isn’t always the best. In fact there may be a few bugs which take a long time to be fixed. That is why people opt for custom ROMS.The Nexus 7 is no exception when it comes to Custom ROMs and Thanks to jamesst20, we have a wonderful one based on AOKP 4.2.2.

The SmoothROM v5.1 uses the Aroma Installer, so you can choose what to install. Another great feature in this ROM, is you can choose to have the taskbar on the bottom or on top of your screen. You can also customize your Lockscreen, Status bar, Power menu, Navigation bar,  Navigation ring etc.

How to install SmoothROM v5.1:

First make sure you have rooted your Nexus 7, and installed a Custom recovery on it.

Then download the ROM from this link and save it on your Nexus 7. Just put it in the default folder, so it is easy to flash.
Reboot to recovery mode and wipe the following:

  • Wipe Factory Data/Reset
  • Wipe Cache
  • Wipe Dalvik Cache
  • System (From the Advanced menu)

Now choose install zip from sd card and navigate to it. If you had placed the ROM’s zip file in the default folder, it will be in the folder “0” (zero).

Follow the on screen instructions and slect the browser of your choice, the kernel, Google Apps, the adblocker, etc. And after you tap on finish the tablet should boot into the ROM and you can start using it after you login.

Tip: Go to settings>aout tablet and tap on the build number 7 times to enable the developer options.

via XDA

Note: This version is for the wifi version of the Nexus 7 only. So do not try it on the 3G version.

The ROM has been perfectly fine for me and helped me solve my charging issue which I faced with the Stock ROM. Thanks for that Google.
