Wayward Souls made its way on to iOS earlier this year, in April, and proved to be a massive hit.
It will be arriving for Android devices tomorrow, and we have had a chance to play it before the official release.
The game was devleoped by Rocketcat Games of Punchquest fame, and has been ported to Android by Noodlecake Games.
Wayward Souls is a dungeon crawler, and is a hybrid of RPG and Roguelike. Yes it has permadeath and you lose all items upon death, so it is a roguelike, but it is not turn based game, so it is an RPG. This may sound crazy, but it’s actually quite a brilliant game.
Gameplay:
The levels, or dungeons, are randomised, so there will be plenty of replay value. It isn’t your typical hack n slash game, you need to move and attack cautiously lest you die. The controls are simple, hold and drag your thumb across the left side of the screen to move the character, and the right side to attack. Hold your thumb to charge up forĀ a more powerful attack. In addition to this, you will come across magic scrolls, which you can use to attack your enemies. You can swipe your finger up or down, to trigger a scroll’s power.
You will also encounter bosses, who may be incredibly difficult to beat. I died on my first try when he rained never ending waves of minions upon me.
There are six playable characters in the game:
- Warrior
- Mage
- Rogue
- Adventurer
- Spellsword
- Cultist
While you can play as any of the first three right away, the other three characters can only be unlocked by playing the game. Each character has their own strengths, and skills.
You can destroy several in game objects to find coins, and there are treasure chests with scrolls and items. You can use the gold you find to buy upgrades, and also to buy cool hats for your hero.
Official Trailer:
The game’s graphics, music and soundeffects complement each other well, but it is the gameplay that takes the crown. It may be frustratingly difficult, and requires some strategical thinking, it is the permadeath factor which will keep you going, this game is a no brainer.
Wayward Souls will be available on Google Play tomorrow for $4.99 for the first week, after which it will be priced at $5.99, like the iOS version. The price may increase by $1 after each content update. But since the game does not have any IAPs or Ads, I think it’s better to buy it during the first week.
