OnePlus has been cooking its own Android ROM, ever since the spat involving Cyanogenmod’s controversial exclusivity agreement deal with Micromax, which resulted in a temporary ban in India.
A beta version of the ROM based on Android Lollipop, was released in December, and now it has a name, OxygenOS.
The name was suggested by one of the company’s fans, and will be the brand name for the International ROMs for the OnePlus One. The Chinese ROM will instead be called H2OS.
The goal of OnePlus is to make its ROM open, customizable, and free of bloatware. OnePlus has said they will reveal more about the new OS on February 12th.
The term “open” suggests that the ROM could be open source, and if so, it may be ported unofficially to other devices. This will not only help OnePlus make a name for themselves like Xiaomi did with MIUI, but could stand up to challenge CyanogenMod and other Custom ROMs as well.
