The WhatsApp Messenger has been updated today, and it finally gets Material Design.
Here is how you can get it.
The update hasn’t rolled out to Google Play yet. The Play Store listing still shows 2.12.5. You will need to update to version 2.12.34 or above to get the new Material Design UI. The version available at WhatsApp’s official website is 2.12.38. Download the APK and install it using any file manager of your choice.
The update should install over your existing version of WhatsApp.
Note: You will need to enable installation of apps from other sources in your device’s security settings, to install APKs obtained from third parties. (i.e, non-Google Play APKs)

Besides the change in the interface, the app also has new animations.
