Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2012 will not get Android M: Google’s Dave Burke confirms

The Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2012 will not get Android M.

The disappointing news comes from the Vice President Engineering at Google, Dave Burke, himself.

It was at Google’s annual developer conference, the Google I/O 2015, that Burke confirmed that the Nexus devices from 2012 will not be updated to Android M.

There is no information on why the devices won’t be updated. Google usually supports OS updates for a device, up to 18 months since it’s launch. The real and absurd reason would probably be that the devices are three years old.  It is not exactly shocking that the Nexus 7 2012 won’t be updated to the latest iteration of Android.

But we are a bit surprised that the Nexus 4 will not be getting Android M. The device has 2GB RAM, and is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, clocked at 1.5GHz. It certainly has the hardware to run Android M, which is touted to focus on RAM and Battery Life.

Since, the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2012 will not get Android M officially, users will now have to rely on custom ROMs like CyanogenMod for Android M, and future OS updates.

Google officially announced Android M on May 28th, and also released the  Developer Preview Android M System Images for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Nexus Player.
