OnePlus has officially announced that its upcoming flagship phone, the OnePlus 2 will be powered by a Snapdragon 810 chipset.

OnePlus-2-Qualcomm-Snapdragon-810-confirmed

This puts an end to the drama speculating whether or not it will come with the dreaded chipset.

We have reported about the OnePlus 2 using a Snapdragon 810 multiple times. The first instance was from OnePlus’ CEO and Founder Pete Lau (aka Liu Zuohu), who asked users what would be a reasonable price for a SD 810 powered device, before admitting that 2499 Yuan (Rs 25,000) as a good price. Althought another report suggests that the OnePlus 2 could be priced at just $320 (Rs. 20000).

Then we came across a leaked benchmark result and even a store listing on Oppomart all  of which pointed to the Snapdragon 810 on the OnePlus 2.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 has been in the news for a long time, and not for the right reasons. The first issue reported with the SD 810, was from Samsung, which complained that the chipset overheats, and that it would not use it in its Galaxy S6. Qualcomm denied this initially.

LG was reportedly furious to hear that Qualcomm was working with Samsung to solve the issue, as it was reported that the South Korean electonics giant’s flagship phone the LG G4 was originally designed to use the Snapdragon 810. However, as it turned out, the Samsung Galaxy S6 was instead powered by an Exynos SoC. Eventually LG also shifted its plans and went with the Snapdragon 808 for the LG G4.

HTC on the other hand took a bold step, and used the SD 810 oon its HTC One M9. And sure enough, reports emerged that the chipset does overheat. The same happened with the Sony Xperia Z4 as well.

Now why is OnePlus making the same mistake? That isn’t the case, as the company’s  CEO, Pete Lau writes in a post at the OnePlus forums.

Lau explains that the OnePlus 2 will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor, specially engineered for the phone. Apparently, the company considered other options, but went with the SD 810, because of its sheer speed, multitasking capacity and battery performance.

The Snapdragon 810 v2.1 is a 64-bit octa-core CPU, which along with an Adreno 430 GPU, will deliver a great experience, says Lau.

The OnePlus 2 will support streaming of 4K Ultra HD videos, will have a quicker camera.

Lau also highlights the 810’s overheating issues in his post.

Although there have been reports that the 810 runs warmer than its predecessors, we assure you that we have taken all the necessary precautions and beyond to prevent this from occurring in the 2. We worked very closely with Qualcomm’s engineers to integrate an improved version of the chipset (v2.1) in the OnePlus 2, and fine-tuned both hardware and software. The 2 will be “cooler than ever”.

The OnePlus 2 will have several CPU processors, on top which two cooling options will be placed: a thermal gel and graphite. The graphite will dissipate heat generated by the processor, evenly to prevent performance issues.

Lau says that the OnePlus 2 has been tested rigorously, and that the phone meets the industry standard  temperature, even after prolonged usage.

The OnePlus 2 will run on OxygenOS optimized to use the larger core of the 8-core CPU for gaming, and the smaller core for basic tasks like text messaging.
