Yesterday, we told you how to update your Moto G Dual SIM to the official version of KitKat 4.4.2.

Motorola Moto G Dual SIM

Today, I am going to walk you through the process of rooting the phone.

Disclaimer: Unlocking the Bootloader will void your warranty.  It will also wipe all the data on your device. Proceed at your own risk.

First you need to unlock the bootloader of the  device, and Motorola have a simple way of doing this. Head over to this link and follow the steps given there to get the unlock code for the bootloader. Please read the terms given at that page, before you unlock the bootloader.

Moto G DisclaimerTip: To copy the unlock data from your command prompt window, right click on the title bar of the window, select edit and choose select all and copy. Paste it into a notepad app of your choice, and delete the unwanted text, leaving only the string which you need.

How to root the Moto G Dual SIM:

Recommended method:

  1. Download Chainfire Auto Root for the XT 1033 from the official website.
  2. Extract the zip file to any folder on your PC.
  3. Make sure you have the USB drivers installed for the phone, and plug in the phone.
  4. Also ensure that you have enabled USB debugging.
  5. Run the BAT file and it should root the phone.

Note: If you get errors, open the BAT file with a text editor and edit the location to point to the folder you extracted the file to.

Outdated method:

Paul O’Brien, the founder of MoDaCo, has created a simple tool for rooting the Moto G. The application is called Superboot.

Download this zip file, and extract it to a folder.

Switch off your phone and boot it into fastboot. You can do so by pressing the volume down and power buttons together.

Run Superboot with Admin Rights Moto G Dual SIM Fastboot Mode Moto G Fastboot Mode with unlocked bootloader statusConnect the phone via usb cable  to your computer.

Now, navigate to the folder where you extracted the zip file’s contents. Right click on the file named run “superboot-windows.bat”, and run it with elevated permissions, i.e  as administrator.

Run Superboot with Admin RightsA command prompt window should open, and may close rather quickly. Wait for your device boot.

If you get some weird looking stripes on the screen or a blank screen, long press the power button to turn off the phone, and switch it on normally. After it boots, you will see a message which says “Android is upgrading”, wait for it to complete.

Then, check your app drawer for the SuperSU icon. Congratulations, you have rooted the phone successfully.

This guide may be applicable to the Single SIM versions of the Moto G too, but I am not 100% if they all use the same bootloader.

Drop a comment below if you need help with the rooting process.
