Evertales is the latest game in Crescent Moon Games’ arsenal for Android devices.
Developed by popular game developers, Tasty Poison, this game has their trademark when it comes to graphics.
Graphics:
This is where the game excels, to some extent. The 2D backgrounds and the environment are stunning, the playable characters are quite good. But the character animations are not so fluid.
The main screen is very impressive. You begin the game by tapping on the book, and you can select the chapters by turning the pages in the book, by swiping across the screen.
You can select any chapter by turning the pages in the book and play it.
Gameplay and controls:
This is the most important part of the game, and sadly also where it falls short. The graphics are gorgeous, especially the main characters, the environment and the animated backgrounds.
There are 3 playable characters whom you can select at anytime by tapping on the portrait icon on the top left.
Sir Jorgin, the mighty knight, is a fierce melee fighter and can take a punch!
Arwick the Elf specializes in ranged weapons, charm, and an attractive double jump!
Taragorn the Senile wields tight spells a loose tongue, and the power to levitate!
You can move the character using a D-pad on the left side of the screen and jump or attack by using the buttons on the right. You can also climb up and down on ladders by using the D-pad. You can change weapons by tapping on the weapon icon on the top right corner.
You cannot change the controls or even select a different layout. And sometimes you may notice the controls aren’t very responsive.
You can collect coins from enemies and chests to unlock all the costumes and weapon upgrades for each character. Some weapons are powerful against bosses, while some are useless, so choose wisely.
There are various obstacles in the game, such as ships which bombard you from the background, sharks which try to bite you, ghosts, arrow spitting skulls, etc. Make sure you time your jumps to avoid being hit as the only way to regenerate health is from the health pickups dropped by enemies.
You can also use boulders, barrels, wheelbarrows to attack enemies or destroy obstacles.
The Elf is the only one who can double-jump and you may want to use him on almost all levels because the Warrior doesn’t jump very high. And there are certain levels where you have to use the Wizards levitation.
There are 6 chapters in the game, each of which consists of two levels. The second level in each consists of a boss fight. There are various checkpoints in the game so if your character dies, it will automatically reload the level from the last checkpoint.
I managed to complete all 6 chapters of the game in less than 2 hours. The seventh is a survival mode where you have to fight waves of enemies in a graveyard.
I am a little disappointed that Tasty Poison haven’t repeated the magic from Pocket RPG, a game which I still play on my devices. They could have added more levels and inventory items like potions, scrolls and maybe gear such as armors, helms, etc
IAPs:
You can easily earn 300 or 400 coins by replaying the chapters. Especially the first chapter as it is very short and has 3 chests which gives you 100 gold each. So you don’t really need IAPs.
Pros:
- Good graphics and music
- Multiple characters to choose from
- Survival mode adds some replayability
- Unlockable costumes for characters and Upgradable weapons
Cons:
- Lack of an in-depth storyline.
- Wonky controls.
- Short levels.
