Dutch smartphone maker, Fairphone, has announced its 5th-gen device. Meet the Fairphone 5.
The sustainable mobile is made with more than 70% fair or recycled focus materials such as Gold, cobalt, lithium, plastics and many more. The back cover is made from 100% recycled plastic. The device does not come with a charger or cable in the box, in order to reduce e-waste.
The Fairphone 5 is a modular phone, which includes 10 repair modules that users may replace easily. The spare parts are sold by Fairphone and its partners. The smartphone is also quite durable, it has an IP 55 Rating for Dust and Splash Resistance, and has passed the MIL-810H Grade and ICE 60058-2-31 Drop Tests. The company is supporting the device with a 5-year warranty.
As for the internals, the Fairphone 5 sports a 6.46-inches OLED Full HD+ screen. The display supports a resolution of 2700 x 1224 pixels, has a 90Hz Refresh Rate, 880 nits Brightness. The panel has an 85% Screen to body ratio, 20:9 aspect ratio, 1000000:1 Contrast Ratio, and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The device is powered by a 2.7GHz octa-core Qualcomm QCM6490 processor, that is comparable to the Snapdragon 778G. It has an Adreno 642L GPU, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and supports up to 2TB of additional storage via a micro SD card slot.
The battery in the Fairphone 5 is a 4200mAh removable battery that supports 30W Charging over a USB Type-C port. The battery can be charged up to 50% in 30 minutes.
The triple camera array on the rear panel of the Fairphone 5 consists of a 50 megapixels primary camera that has a Sony IMX 800 sensor with an f/1.88 aperture, an 84.1° FOV, and supports optical image stabilization (OIS), 8x digital Zoom. It has a 50 megapixels ultrawide lens with a Sony IMX 858 sensor, that supports electronic image stabilization (EIS), a 117° FoV, and Macro Mode photography. The third sensor on the device is a Time of Flight Sensor, and is accompanied by an LED Flash. The cameras support 4K UHD video recording at 30 frames per second, 1080p Full HD @ 60fps, and Slow-motion @ 120 / 240 fps. The selfie camera on the phone is a 50 megapixels Samsung JN1 sensor with an f/2.45 aperture, a 90° FOV, and supports EIS, and 4K @30fs.
The Fairphone 5 supports 5G and 4G LTE via Dual SIM cards, one of which is an eSIM slot, while the other accepts Nano SIM cards. Other connectivity options in the device include support for Wi-Fi 2.4GHz/5GHz and 6GHz, Bluetooth 5.2 + LE, NFC, GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, and BDS. The phone has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a compass, a gyroscope, a proximity sensor, and an accelerometer.
The Fairphone 5 does not have a 3.5 mm headphone jack, but has dual stereo speakers. The device measures 162 x 75.5 x 10.5 mm in size.
