Last week, we told you about a report which claimed that Google will fold Chrome OS into Android.
Well, the Mountain View company apparently didn’t take kindly to the rumour.
Google has officially denied it will merge Chrome OS into Android, and says “Chrome OS is here to stay”.
Hiroshi Lockheimer, the new SVP of Android, Chrome OS and Chromecast clarified the issue in an official statement:
While we’ve been working on ways to bring together the best of both operating systems, there’s no plan to phase out Chrome OS.
Google says that there are 30,000 Chromebooks being activated in U.S. schools everyday, so the point is the devices are doing just fine with Chrome OS. The company also plans to release a new media player, Material Design interface, along with improved performance, and security improvements for Chrome OS.
“Best of both operating systems”, will we still see Google Play on Chromebooks? Only time will answer that question.
