A Wi-Fi hotspot can be useful when your regular internet, i.e. broadband or fiber line is not available, as you can use it to share your 4G or 5G mobile network with other devices including smartphones, laptops, PCs, tablets, etc. Today, we are going to show you how to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in MIUI.
The best part is that you don’t need to use any app to do this.
How to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in MIUI
1. Go to the Settings.
2. Tap on Portable Hotspot.
3. Select the “Set up portable hotspot” option.
4. This will open a screen where you can set up your network’s name and password. Set it up as required.
5. Tap on the check mark button at the top of the screen.
There are some optional settings that you may want to configure. Tap on the Security option under the hotspot set up page, and you can choose between WPA2 Personal and WPA3 Personal. WPA3 offers a more secure connection, but the network protocol is relatively new. So it may not be supported by all of your devices. In this case, you may want to stick with WPA2.
The device identification setting can be set to default or portable hotspot. If you set it as a personal hotspot, other devices that are connected to it will use limited data, to prevent excessive usage. The Hide its SSID option prevents your hotspot’s name from being displayed to other devices in range, if you enable the option, other users will only see a “Hidden Network” in their available networks page. A user who wishes to connect to it will need to type the network’s name and password to use the hotspot.
Go back to the previous screen, and you have some more settings, including a share QR code option. This will display a QR code on the screen which another user can scan with their camera. This is a quick way to connect to the hotspot. Scroll down the page to the manage devices section, to see a list of devices that are connected to the hotspot.
You have gained the knowledge about how to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot in MIUI and manage its settings.
Note: Please do not use a weak password that others can guess. You should use a unique password, i.e. one that is not used for your online accounts. This is important because you may want to share your hotspot with your friends and family members.
This tutorial can also be followed on other Android devices. The setting in step 2 will be located in a different place. It can be found under Network & Internet > Hotspot & Tethering.
