The Nexus Phone drama continues, after an LG Executive denied that the company is involved with the Nexus 6, earlier this month.
Now it is Motorola’s turn in the rumor mill, with the former “Google Owned Company”, reported as the manufacturer of this year’s Nexus phone .
According to AndroidPolice, the Motorola Nexus phone will have a 5.9″ display. If this is true, it will be Google’s first foray in the phablet world. The Moto Nexus 6 is also rumored, to feature a Fingerprint-sensor.
The Motorola Nexus 6, has been codenamed “Shamu”. It is the name of a captive killer whale.
Google is known for naming some of their Nexus devices, after different kinds of fish.
- Nexus 5 – Hammerhead – Shark
- Nexus 10 – Mantaray – Eagle Ray
- Galaxy Nexus (CDMA) -Mysid – Mysida Shrimp
- Galaxy Nexus (GSM variant)- Maguro – Japanese for Tuna (Sushi)
So, Shamu could well be the Nexus 6.
There is a reference to “shamu” in Google’s issue tracker.
Note that the issue has been officially accepted by Google, which could virtually be an official confirmation that the Shamu is the Nexus 6. Also worth noting, is the fact that the issue is related to Android L. AndroidPolice also says that the email id used to report the issue, is from Spirent Communications, a company which tests devices for errors, such as the one reported.
The phone is targeted for a November launch, possibly coinciding with the release of Android L.
In my opinion, a 5.9″ display is not ideally comfortable, and therefore not suitable for the average Nexus user. Would you buy a Nexus phablet? Drop a comment below with your thoughts on it.
