OnePlus has announced that it will support some devices with 4 years of OxygenOS updates. There is a catch to this though.
OnePlus to deliver 4 years of OxygenOS updates
In an announcement that was published at its community forums, the Chinese OEM has revealed that it will deliver 4 years of OxygenOS updates for its devices. So we can expect OnePlus phones to get 4 Android upgrades. It will also offer one year of additional support in terms of security updates, i.e. the mobiles will get 4 major OS updates and 5 years of security updates.
This is not surprising considering that OnePlus’ flagship phones are sold at premium prices. The company has to match the standards set by Samsung and Google in order to compete in the flagship market.
The catch here is that these 4 years of OxygenOS updates will only apply to select phones that are launched in 2023 and beyond. The Verge says that OnePlus declined to answer when questioned about which devices are eligible for the long term software support. We think this could only apply to the flagship products from OnePlus.
The blog notes that while the OnePlus 10 Pro and 10T will get three years of OS upgrades, and 4 years of security updates, the OnePlus Nord 2T will get 2 OS upgrades and 3 years of security updates, and the Nord N300 will only get 1 OS upgrade and 2 years of security updates.
In comparison, Google offers 3 years of Android OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates for all its Pixel phones, including midrange devices like the Pixel 6a and flagship phones such as the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. Samsung was the first to announce that it will support its devices with 4 years of Android OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates.
Apple remains the best when it comes to committing to OS updates, it supports iPhones with 5 years of iOS updates.
