Mukesh Ambani has announced some pretty big news today, at Reliance’s Annual General Meeting, in India. And you know what means, Reliance Jio is official people. All voice calls will be free for Jio users, we are not kidding.

All voice calls will be free to any number, regardless of what network you are calling to. Technically you are only paying for Data and not for calls. This is not just impressive, but almost unbelievable. This is what Mukesh Ambani had to say at the AGM:
I have great pleasure in announcing that all voice calls for Jio customers will be ABSOLUTELY FREE: Mukesh Ambani#JioDigitalLife
— Reliance Jio (@reliancejio) September 1, 2016
And what we find more impressive is that all plans except for the basic one will have unlimited SMS, something which has existed in the U.S for a long time. This move could very well put an end to SMS charges for good, and also prove to be a serious competition to WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, etc. Of course these services let you send pictures, videos, and have the ability to display link previews, something which SMS can’t do, but think about it, you can send SMS from any phone even if it is just a feature phone.
What’s impressive is that Jio will be calculating WiFi tethering and mobile data separately. This is using the JioNet Hotspot, for which you will probably need the HotSpot device being sold by the company’s stores.
Plans start from Rs 149 per month, and go all the way up to Rs 4499 per month. We think the second tier, at Rs 499 per month for unlimited voice calls, unlimited SMS, 4GB of data + unlimited 4G at night along with 8GB of JioBet will prove to be the best plan for most users.
You can watch Mr. Ambani’s speech online at YouTube.
The Jio Welcome Offer with Data, Voice, Video and Jio applications and content will be available for free for everyone from September 5th until 31st December 2016.
Jio expects to hit 250TB of data usage per month, and plans to offer Fiber networks at 1GBPS speeds for home connections.
Update:
Reliance Jio has sent us the official Press Release, and the above chart shows the actual Jio Prepaid and Post-Paid Tariff plans. IT appears that there will NOT be unlimited SMS for any plan, and instead there is a maximum of 100/day only (because of TRAI rules).
