In spite of not so popular opinion on the iPhone X type notch, Android OEM manufacturers have caught on the “notch” trend by releasing smartphones with iPhone X type notch on the front display. Most recent addition to this list is the upcoming “OnePlus 6” which is confirmed to come up with the “notch”. Samsung till date has stayed away from this trend, but it appeas that they are already working on something similar as suggested by the latest patent from the company at Chinese Patent Office.
Chinese Patent Office has listed a patent (PDF) from Samsung which reveals a new upcoming smartphone in works with a “notch” similar to iPhone X at the top of the display, while there is no bezels at other sides or bottom. On the rear, a dual camera module can be seen but no fingerprint sensor is present at the rear suggesting that it may be the under the screen at front. Obviously the patent doesn’t indicate any possible name of the upcoming device, but we can expeect it to be used in upcoming flagship series from Samsung such as Galaxy Note 9 or Galaxy S10.
Apart from this patent showing the notch, Chinese patent office also lists out another patent (PDF) from Samsung which reveals a full screen device without any notch but with a screen to body ratio of almost 99% with no bezels on any side. There is no visible fingerprint scanner, no speaker, sensors & front camera on the front. This design indicates that everything will be embedded under the display as it is already planned for the fingerprint scanner. We are not sure when this will be economically feasible to mass produce and hence only gives us a look at the future from Samsung.
These two patents does excite us a lot and we expect that Samsung may integrate these features soon into their flagship devices. Stay tuned at Androidpure and we will keep you updated.
