If you have been a WhatsApp user, you may have noticed that the app has a $1 fee for a year’s worth of service.
But when was the last time you paid for it ? If the answer is never, here’s actually why that makes sense.
Neeraj Arora, the Vice-President of WhatsApp, paid a visit to the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, where he made a surprise announcement. This is what he said:
Whatsapp is not enforcing the fee here as there were several ecosystem issues such as low penetration of credit cards.
This isn’t surprising, considering that the number of people who use their credit/debit cards for Online purchases in India is still very low. Even lower is the percentage of people who make online purchases.
Apart from not charging users for the app, the company has also tied up with 5 telecom companies to provide free Whatsapp usage, even without a data plan. Now this, is truly a great move.
