A teaser image for Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship phone, the Mi 5, has been leaked online.
The above image was posted on the Chinese social network Weibo.
The fingerprint on the bottom of the image, suggests that the device will come with a fingerprint scanner. The Xiaomi Mi 5 was touted to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, but that S0C is only likely to be available in 2016. Xiaomi cannot afford to go another 6 months without a new flagship device, as the Xiaomi Mi 4 is already over a year old. This explains why the teaser image has been leaked, as it could launch a 2015 flagship soon.
Reports coming out of China suggest that Xiaomi could be using a new version of the Snapdragon 810 on the Mi 5, similar to the one in the One Plus Two. This isn’t exactly good news, as the chipset has been drawing flak for overheating, and is used in an underclocked form in the OnePlus 2. But Xiaomi really doesn’t have a choice here, as it is prohibited from selling MediaTek powered phones in India, which explains why the Mi Note Pro will not hit our Country’s shores.
Xiaomi has been concentrating on mid range devices such as the Redmi 2, Redmi 2 Prime and the Xiaomi Mi4i, which have done well, in India. The company is readying a flagship variant of the Mi4i for China, and the device’s name is the Xiaomi Mi4c, and it will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808.
Only time will tell us whether the Chinese OEM will use a Snapdragon 808 or a 810 v2.1 chipset in the Xiaomi Mi 5. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing the 808 in a Mi 5.
